Questions Mobile homeowners ask us

Licensing, prices, FORTIFIED and the grant, permits, insurance, deductibles, shingles versus metal, algae, gutters and the Eastern Shore: the short answers. Anything we missed, call and ask.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Alabama requires a Home Builders Licensure Board roofer license with a $10,000 bond for any residential roofing job over $2,500, and ours is printed on every contract with the certificate of insurance for general liability and workers' comp. Ask to see the Board's license card and verify it at hblb.alabama.gov or 334-242-2230.

How much does a new roof cost in Mobile?

In 2026, about $10,500 to $17,000 for architectural shingles on a typical 1,800 to 2,400 square-foot house, $12,000 to $19,500 built FORTIFIED, $15,000 to $26,000 for 5V or R-panel metal, and $24,000 to $42,000 for standing seam. The Strengthen Alabama Homes grant can take up to $10,000 off a FORTIFIED roof.

What is a FORTIFIED roof?

The IBHS standard for a roof that stays on and keeps water out in a hurricane: a sealed, re-nailed deck with ring-shank nails, an adhered starter strip and wide drip edge, wind-rated vents and Class H shingles or tested metal, verified by an evaluator. Alabama insurers must offer a discount for it and the state pays up to $10,000 toward it in Mobile and Baldwin counties.

How do I get the $10,000 grant?

Apply at strengthenalabamahomes.com when a window opens for your county; in 2026 Mobile opened on January 6, April 7, July 7 and October 6, and Baldwin two days after each. Primary residence, no income test, windows fill in hours. We'll tell you the next date and help.

Do you charge for inspections?

Storm and pre-season inspections are free, with photos. Written reports for a home sale or an insurer and leak diagnoses carry a small fee that's credited toward the repair.

Do you require a deposit?

Not until you've approved the written price and we've scheduled the work. A materials deposit may be due when the shingles or panels are delivered, and the balance on completion.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof?

In most of the area, yes. Mobile County issues re-roof permits on a signed estimate at 0.5 percent of the contract; the City of Mobile (251-208-7696) and each Eastern Shore and Highway 43 city have their own offices. Minor repairs generally don't need one. We pull whatever your address requires.

Will insurance pay for hurricane damage?

Usually, for sudden wind damage, minus your hurricane deductible, which on the coast is often 2 to 5 percent of the dwelling coverage. Wear, algae and a roof already at the end of its life are the usual exclusions. We document before you file and meet the adjuster.

Can you waive my deductible?

No. That's insurance fraud for both of us, and the Home Builders Licensure Board warns about exactly that after every hurricane. The deductible is yours and it's itemized on the contract.

Shingles or metal?

For most Mobile houses, Class H architectural shingles built FORTIFIED. For houses on the water and owners who want the last roof they'll buy, standing-seam Galvalume. We quote both. See the comparison guide.

How long does a replacement take?

Most shingle roofs are done in a day, two for a big cut-up roof. Standing seam takes two to three days. We don't start a tear-off with rain in the forecast and never leave a slope open overnight.

Why are there black streaks on my roof?

Algae (Gloeocapsa magma) feeding on the limestone in the shingles, which Mobile's humidity encourages. It's cosmetic at first and shortens shingle life over time. A soft wash removes it; algae-resistant shingles prevent it.

Do you do gutters?

Yes: 6-inch seamless aluminum sized for Mobile cloudbursts, with micro-mesh guards for pine straw and oak tassels, usually installed with the roof.

Do you serve the Eastern Shore?

Yes: Daphne, Fairhope and Spanish Fort, plus Mobile, Tillmans Corner, Theodore, Semmes, Saraland, Satsuma, Creola, Prichard, Chickasaw, Grand Bay and Bayou La Batre.

Do you really answer at night?

Yes, 24 hours a day, every day, hurricane nights included. Water in the house is dispatched first; an estimator calls back the next business morning for non-emergencies.

Worried about your roof before the next storm, or after this one?
