Metal or shingles on the Gulf Coast? A straight comparison
Standing seam is on the bayfront houses and the new builds in Fairhope. Architectural shingles are on 90 percent of everything else. Both are good Gulf Coast roofs when they're built right. Here's where each one wins, with 2026 Mobile numbers.
The short version
A Class H architectural shingle roof built to the FORTIFIED standard costs $12,000 to $19,500 on a typical Mobile house, lasts 18 to 25 years here, and earns the same insurance discount as metal. A standing-seam metal roof costs $24,000 to $42,000, lasts 40 to 60 years, handles salt air and wind better, and is the roof you buy once. Over 50 years the two cost about the same; the difference is whether you pay now or later, and whether you'll own the house long enough to care. For most Mobile houses, shingles built FORTIFIED. For houses on the water, houses you'll keep for decades, and anyone tired of re-roofing, metal.
Side by side
| Factor | Architectural shingles (Class H, FORTIFIED) | Standing-seam metal |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 cost, 1,800–2,400 sq ft home | $12,000 – $19,500 | $24,000 – $44,000 |
| Lifespan in Mobile | 18 – 25 years | 40 – 60 years |
| Hurricane wind | Good when nailed, sealed and edged to FORTIFIED | Excellent when clipped and tested to site pressures |
| Salt air | Unaffected | Galvalume or aluminum needed near the water; plain galvanized rusts |
| Algae and streaking | Needs algae-resistant granules; still streaks eventually | None; chalking and fading on cheap finishes |
| Heat | Absorbs; attic ventilation critical | Reflects; cooler attic with a light Kynar finish |
| Noise in rain | Quiet | Quiet over a solid deck; loud only over open purlins |
| Repairs | Easy, any roofer | Specialist; leaks at flashing details, not the field |
| FORTIFIED eligible | Yes, Class H shingles | Yes, tested to site pressures |
| Insurance | FORTIFIED discount | FORTIFIED discount; some carriers add a metal credit |
| Grant (Strengthen Alabama Homes) | Up to $10,000 | Up to $10,000 |
| HOAs | Almost always allowed | Restricted in some newer subdivisions |
| Resale | Neutral | A selling point on the coast |
Wind: the hurricane question
Both systems pass the FORTIFIED test when they're installed right, and both fail when they're not. Shingles fail at the edges and the ridge, where a staple, a high nail or a loose starter lets the wind in; Sally's 81-mph gusts at Mobile Regional took eave courses and ridge caps off roofs that were nailed wrong and left the ones next door alone. Metal fails at the fasteners and the trim; exposed-fastener panels with backed-out screws peel from the edge, and standing seam with too few clips or untested attachment lifts at the rakes. A standing-seam roof clipped and tested to the site's design pressures is the stronger system in the worst wind; a shingle roof with six ring-shank nails per shingle on the line, a sealed deck and an adhered starter is a very good one, and the sealed deck under either keeps the water out even if the covering goes.
Heat, humidity and the 25-year wall
Shingles die faster in Mobile than their wrappers promise because asphalt cooks in a 140-degree attic, humidity feeds algae, and UV is relentless; 18 to 25 years is the honest range, with ventilation deciding which end. Metal doesn't care about any of that. A Galvalume standing-seam roof with a Kynar (PVDF) finish holds its color for decades and reflects heat that shingles absorb, which shows up in July power bills. The trade is detailing: a metal roof leaks at the hips, valleys, sidewalls and penetrations when someone used screws and caulk where a formed flashing belonged, and it needs a roofer who does metal every week, not twice a year.
Salt air
Within a few miles of the bay or the Gulf (Dauphin Island, Bayou La Batre, Theodore's river communities, the Eastern Shore bluff, Point Clear), plain galvanized panels and uncoated screws rust in a decade. Galvalume (aluminum-zinc coated steel) or aluminum panels with stainless or coated fasteners and sealed cut edges last. Shingles don't care about salt, which is one reason an inland shingle roof is an easier decision than a bayfront one.
Exposed-fastener metal: the middle option
5V crimp and R-panel in 26-gauge Galvalume cost $15,000 to $26,000 on a typical house, about half of standing seam, and make a fine Gulf Coast roof on shops, barns, porches and budget-driven houses. The screws and neoprene washers need checking and sometimes replacing every ten years or so, and the panels must still be rated for your wind zone. It's the traditional look on a lot of older Mobile County houses for good reason.
Our recommendation by situation
A 1990s subdivision house in west Mobile, Tillmans Corner or Spanish Fort that you'll sell in ten years: Class H shingles built FORTIFIED with the grant. A house on the water, or within a mile of it: standing seam in Galvalume or aluminum, FORTIFIED. A Midtown or Spring Hill house you'll keep for decades, with a cut-up roof: either, and the decision is budget; standing seam on a complex roof is expensive but it's the last roof you'll buy. A historic-district house: shingles, or metal with Architectural Review Board approval, often standing seam on the porch and shingles on the main roof as the originals were. A shop, barn or pole building: R-panel. Anyone who hates re-roofing: metal. We quote both so you can see the numbers. See metal roofing and architectural shingles.
Common questions
Does a metal roof lower my insurance?
Some carriers give a credit for metal by itself; all Alabama carriers must offer the FORTIFIED discount, which either system can earn. Ask your agent for both figures.
Is a metal roof loud when it rains?
Not over a solid deck with underlayment and attic insulation, which is how we install it on houses. The tin-roof sound is from panels on open purlins over a barn or a porch.
Can metal go over my old shingles?
We don't do it. An overlay traps moisture against the deck in this humidity, hides rot, and can't be re-nailed and sealed to the FORTIFIED standard. Tear-off first.
Will a metal roof rust in Mobile?
Galvalume and aluminum with coated fasteners don't, for decades. Plain galvanized does near the water. The spec sheet matters more than the word 'metal.'
How long does each one take to install?
Shingles, one day on most houses. Standing seam, two to three days, more on a cut-up roof. Neither should leave a slope open overnight.
Does the grant pay toward metal?
Yes, up to $10,000 of the FORTIFIED mitigation cost for a Mobile or Baldwin primary residence, whichever system you choose.
